Message In my driveline rebuild, it turned out that the excessive freeplay was cumulative. Here are some possible sources and how to field test for too much slop.

>Differential bushings, four (4) each. 2 rear, 2 front. These you diagnose by using a crowbar to pry between the rear axle housing and the rear support 'cradle'. Pry between at different points to test for any movement.

> Axle (drive) shafts. Either the Inboard [rebuildable] ball joints or outboard [non-rebuildable] CV joints. Test by turning wheel while holding drive axle flange. Should not be more than 5-7 degrees of freeplay.

> Ring and Pinion free play - Will hear axle whine. Test by turning drive axle flange (at differential) and pinion input flange). Should not be more than 5 degrees of freeplay.

> Shaft Bearings: Trans output; pinion input; differential output [drive axle] flange - Less likely culprits, and difficult to test. Sometimes there is visible lateral movement.
